Mountain Lions Football Team Kicks Off Season

As we come into the month of September, Concord University’s football team dives right in with the first two games of the season. They kicked off in the right direction by winning their first away game against Wesleyan, on Sept. 1, with the score 34-31.

Freshman kicker Luke Walls’ brought home the win, with a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game. Returning home in high spirits, they began to prepare for their next game.

On Sept. 6, students, faculty, and family filled the bleachers at Callaghan Stadium to cheer on the Mountain Lions, as they prepared to face Charleston’s Golden Eagles.

Kickoff started at 7 p.m. UC scored the first two touchdowns in the opening two quarters of the game.

The Golden Eagles went into halftime with a 14-0 lead. With just 59 seconds starting into the second half, Charleston scored a touchdown. In the middle of the third quarter, the Mountain Lions ran 12 plays, which allowed them to reach 35. Concord’s defensive line seemed to toughen up then, but it was no match for Charleston’s lead. Each team managed to score in the last few minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles amassed 437 yards, while the Mountain Lions amassed over 100 yards.

Although it was not the result they were looking for, Concord fans and players left the field that night still in high hopes that this game wouldn’t be a reflection on the team’s overall ability to perform.

Head coach Paul Price, speaks in a few articles about the game, saying that it was overall a productive one. He believes that the overall difference in the game was that the Mountain Lions are still evolving and has no doubt that Concord will only improve after every game.

On Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. Concord University will play against the UVA- Wise Cavaliers. CU will travel to UVA’s field, in Wise, Virginia. UVA has an overall ranking of 42nd in Offense and 15th in Defense.

Although they are ranks are impressive, the Mountain Lions will prove in this season that they are a force to be reckoned with. The Mountain Lions will have their next home game on Sept. 22, against Notre Dame, at Callaghan Stadium.
