Mountain East Conference: Sports Round Up
Football— The Concord University football team fell against Fairmont State, 35-0 on Saturday, Nov. 4.
The Falcons took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, and capped a 14- play drive with a touchdown during the second quarter making it 14-0 with 13:38 left in the first half. After Concord took a punt in the second half, Fairmont drove the field and upped the lead to 21-0. During the fourth quarter the Falcons found the end zone two more times, making for the final victory of 35-0.
The Mountain Lion Lions will finish up the season on the road against Urbana at UU Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.
Volleyball—The Concord University volleyball team downed UVa.-Wise in four games Tuesday, Nov.7 in the Mountain East Conference play.
UVa.-Wise had won the first set 25-17, but Concord rebounded to take the win in the next three games of 28-26, 25-13, and 25-22.
The second game was back and fourth between both the Cavaliers and the Mountain Lions neither team leading more than three points.
Sophomore outside hitter Ellie Lawrence had recorded her first kill of the game. Both teams scored a point to even the set of 26-26, but with back to back errors UVa.-Wise tied the overall match at 1-1, with Concord taking the second set at 28-26.
During the third set, the Mountain Lions raced out a 10-5 edge with the Cavaliers. Junior middle hitter Brooke Heck, senior middle hitter Shea Hoffman sophomore setter Jenna Mounts, outside hitter Alexi Pranckus all each had kills during the set.
Heck had led the team with 19 kills and hitting .424. The Huntington, West Virginia native had a season high in kills, and was only one off from tying to her career high.
Both Mountain Lion setters, senior Casey Mandeville and Mounts had recorded double-doubles. Mandeville had 33 assists and 13 digs with Mounts having 21 assist and 12 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis had completed the match with 12 kills and six blocks to tie next to Heck for overall team-best. Pranckus had notched 11 kills and seven digs. Hoffman had six kills, and a .556 hitting percentage with five blocks to complete the sets.
The Mountain Lions will have their next game against West Virginia State Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. Both seniors, outside hitter Felicia Huerta and Mandeville will be recognized.
Men’s Cross Country—The Concord University Men’s Cross Country team saw three members, seniors Tyler Kosut, Justin Snyder, and junior Jason Weitzel all earn All-Atlantic Region at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship, with Weitzel who secured a berth at the NCAA Division II Championship later in the month.
The race took place at the West Branch Cross Country Course at Lock Haven University campus on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Weitzel clocked in a time of 31:20 placing eighth, to secure a spot at the national meet. Snyder completed a t imd of 31:26 on the 10,000-meter course and took ninth. Kosut clocked in a time of 31:51 and came in at 13th.
All three members helped complete a fourth-place team showing.
Junior Michael Ruhnke placed 33rd at the meet with clocking in a time 32:39. Freshman Samuel Haynes completed the scoring runner with a time of 33:56 coming in at 75th.
Junior Jacob Ashcraft completed a time of 35:36, and freshman Samuel Thomas completing a time of 34:56.
Concord and Snyder as an individual will be up for the national championship on November 18.
Women’s Soccer— Concord University’s freshman midfielder Yasmin Mosby was selected to the Mountain East Conference All-Tournament team that was announced Sunday Nov. 5.
Mosby had shot a goal in the semifinal game against Notre Dame.
Mosby accounted three goals and two assists during the regular assist. She was joined to the All-MEC Tournament Team.
