Mountain East Conference: Sports Round up

Football—The Concord University football team concluded their season with a 35-15 loss against Urbana on Saturday, Nov. 11 in the Mountain East Conference play. 

    During the first three quarters, Concord kept the score close until the Blue Knights scored two touchdowns during the fourth-quarter to finish the game. Senior running back Jamal Petty scored his first touchdown with a 25-yard rush at the 13:40 mark during the second quarter. The Mountain Lions had lead on a two-point delay as junior tight end Mark Large found senior defensive back Jeremiah Johnson for the conversion. 

    However, the Blue Knights shut the Mountain Lions lead down with a four-play drive and gained a14-8 lead. Within the last few minutes of the first half, the Blue Knights made another touchdown leading with an advantage of 21-8. 

    After a scoreless third quarter, Petty was able to get another touchdown during the fourth quarter with a short four-yard plunge that capped five-play, 82-yard drive. The Blue Knights added a touchdown with two minute remaining. 

    Freshman quarterback Adam Fulton completed 10 passes for 85 yards to eight various Mountain Lion receivers. Senior tight end Jordan Bryant had three receptions for 32 yards. Junior linebacker Zach Malone had 10 tackles. For Johnson’s final season he intercepted his 11th career pass and tied Craig Plymal for the fifth on the all-time interceptions list. Sophomore linebacker Ty Walker forced two fumbles, and sophomore defensive back Ke’Shawn Hall recorded seven tackles.

    As of Nov. 14, the football team has had six players that were selected to the All-MEC Team including three first team selections. First-team selections include players, senior defensive back Johnson, senior punter Garrett Lee, and freshman wide receiver Tywan Pearce. Second-team picks where junior offensive lineman Derek Dressler and junior linebacker Zach Malone. Senior tight end Jordan Bryant was named to the honorable mention squad.

 

Men’s Basketball—The Concord University men’s basketball team has selected junior guard Tommy Bolte the Mountain East Conference Player for the week of the season. 

    Bolte has averaged 41.5 points and eight assists in two games against Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State. He shot 65.3 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. In the victory game against Fayetville State, Bolte scored 40 points and had 10 assists. During the second game, he scored 43 points while making 15 three pointers and 12 free throws. This is the second time Bolte has earned conference player of the week after achieving the feat at the end of the last season. The Mountain Lions continue to prepare for the upcoming season.

Volleyball—The Concord University volleyball team has been placed in the seventh seed in the 2017 Mountain East Conference Tournament. The tournament begins Thursday at Wheeling Jesuit University at the McDonough Center in Wheeling, W.Va. Concord is set to play a two-seeded Charleston at 2:30 p.m. The Lady Mountain Lions will be making their second straight appearance in the MEC Tournament and its fourth in the last five years of being in the league. The Quarterfinal round will match up against the winner of the Shepherd and West Liberty match. The other side of the bracket has top seeded Wheeling Jesuit University set to play West Virginia Wesleyan ands Fairmont State against Urbana in the other match.
