Mountain East Conference: Sports Round Up
Women’s Basketball— The Concord University women’s basketball team has been ranked to finish 12th in the Mountain East Conference coaches’ poll released Tuesday, Oct. 17.
With the Mountain Lions bringing back five starters from last season, senior guard Danielle Catron is the top returner with an average of 12.5 points per game, shooting 46.6 percent. Junior guard Lindsey Overbey has an average of 8.7 points per game, with 4.2 rebounds per contest. Senior forward Heather Chapman brings for the Mountain Lions a total of 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 27 start, and sophomore forward Madison May had an average of 4.1 points per game last season in 26 games and five starts.
With 11 new recruits for this season, the Mountain Lions start their season Nov. 10 at the MEC-PSAC Challenge against Clarion in Fairmont, W.Va.
Men’s Basketball— The Concord University men’s basketball has been ranked to finish 10th in the Mountain East Conference coaches preseason poll released Monday, Oct. 16.
The Mountain Lions have five returning players from last season that finished 11-17 overall winning six of eight games. Two seniors B.J. Hamlet has played in 76 career games averaging a score of 6.3 points per game shooting 3.7 percent from last season, and Cal Cistaro who had a career-best tie in playing 1o games each season.
Returning junior guard Tommy Bolte averages 10.6 points and 3.4 assists per game, averaging 22.1 points per game in his last six games during the 2016-2017 season.
Sophomore forward Trey Brisco and sophomore guard Colby Hill played in their first career season last year after redshirting the previous season. Brisco played in 13 games last season, with Hill playing in five.
Head coach Todd May welcomes 11 new recruits for the 2017-2018 season, with seven players playing outside of the high school level for the first time.
The Mountain Lions start their season Nov. 10 at the MEC-CIAA Challenge against Fayetteville State in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Women’s Soccer— The Concord University women’s soccer team has named two freshman Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, released Monday, Oct. 16 in the Mountain East Conference.
Defender Morgan Carmichael picked up her first award after notching two assists against the Notre Dame game with a CU victory of 4-2. Carmichael also helped the Mountain Lions lead their sixth shutout of the season with a 1-0 win against West Liberty. She assisted both goals made by Courtney Wallace in the game against NDC, scoring her first career points.
Midfielder Courtney Wallace, earned the award of offensive player of the week by recording five points. By scoring two goals against Notre Dame and getting the double over time goal for Concord against West Liberty, she also proceeded to slam in a corner kick into the box assisting freshman Sara Bane scoring her second goal of the season.
Men’s Soccer— The Concord University men’s soccer team shied away one goal against West Virginia Wesleyan (2-1) Sunday Oct. 15, in the Mountain East Conference.
As WVWC scored a goal crossing kicking into the 24th minute, CU recorded three shots in the second half as midfielder sophomore Maxime Ramioulle kicked two shots wide, and midfielder senior Yacouba Issa Traore had his attempt saved.
The Mountain Lions had outshot WVWC in the second half with 12-4 and 16-10 during the game.
Goalkeeper freshman Kyle Brown saved six shots.
Football— The Concord University football team took a tough loss to West Virginia State Saturday, Oct. 14.
Leading with 14-0 with two touchdown scores, the Yellow Jackets took over in the first quarter. Concord Mountain Lions drove nine plays, and 64 yards at the end of the first quarter however, freshman offensive lineman Nathan Toney has a sweeping run three yards out. West Virginia State held the lead at halftime with a 26-point advantage.
Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Plyler caught a fade route on fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line with 6:02 left in the third quarter.
However West Virginia State scored 14 points to lead back to a 47-21 deficit against Concord with 9:28 remaining in the game.
The Mountain Lions play at home noon against non-conference UNC-Pembroke Saturday, Oct. 21.
