Mountain East conference: Sports Round up

Women’s Soccer— Concord University’s women’s soccer team had picked up a 6-0 victory against Urbana on September 24, at UU Stadium. The Mountain Lions have advanced to a 4-4 on the season and a 2-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Only scoring one goal during the first half of the game, the ladies came back scoring another five goals. Junior forward Pilar Elias scored her first goal of the season during the 16th minute of the second half. Freshman forward Sarah Hill scored within six minutes into the second half to make the Mountain Lions lead with 2-0. Shortly after, freshman midfielder Courtney Wallace made the score 3-0 with her first career score with a penalty kick. Sophomore defender Delaney Crumblish added the fourth goal, assisted by Sarah Hill with 26 minutes remaining in the game. Sarah Hill scored her second goal of the game putting the Mountain Lions up 5-0 in the final minute of the game. Scoring within the very last minute of the game was freshman forward Sarah Bane who tallied her first career goal. Sophomore Megan Walsh set up Bane for the goal. Katie Maher and Sydney Harris, freshman goalkeepers combined to help Concord with the shutout win. The six goals in the game against Urbana were the most for Concord University in more than three years, dating back to when eight goals were scored against Salem International University on September 10, 2015.

Volleyball— The Lady Mountain Lions have advanced to 7-9 on the 2017 season with a 2-0 win in the conference following a 25-23 win in set one, 25-11 win in set two, and a 25-21 win in the final set over the Glenville State Pioneers who are 0-9 so far on the season and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord was close to playing a perfect first set but a few minor mistakes including a serve error let the Pioneers hang on closely. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis and junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus combined together to put up three kills to close off the first set for the Mountain Lions, during this set Concord hit .576% with 19 kills in 33 attempts. The energy from the first set surely carried over to the second set while the Lady Mountain Lions glided through the set. Once up 7-5, Concord went on a 15-4 run to bring up a 22-9 advantage. Ellis and senior outside hitter Felicia Huerta each had two kills in this set, contributing to three other different Mountain Lions contributing with kills. Out of CU’s ten total team blocks, eight of those blocks came in the second se. Emily Ellis resulted with a team best having eleven kills in a total of fifteen attempts with a .733 hitting percentage. Alexi Pranckus added ten kills and eight digs, while Felicia Huerta had four kills of her own along with five blocks. Ellis had a total of three solo and three assisting blocks totaling six blocks, and junior middle hitter Brooke Heck added four blocks of her own. The Lady Mountain Lions host the Rams of Bluefield College 7:00 p.m. tonight. 

Men’s Golf— The Concord University Mountain Lion Men’s Golf team finished ninth place at the Wally Edgell Classic that wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, W.VA. The Mountain Lions shot 303 as a team on the first day of the tournament as junior Marti Puig lead Concord with a 75. Freshman Brett Laxton shot a team best 71 on Tuesday to lead CU to a team score of 300. A total of eleven strokes separated Wheeling Jesuit in fifth place from Shepherd in tenth place at the tournament. Laxton was the Mountain Lion’s top golfer in the thirty six event, shooting a total of 147 in two days. Seventy six on the first day and seventy one on the second day to finish twenty first. Freshman Jared Porter also shot a seventy six on the first day and came back the following day shooting a seventy three, which placed him in a tie for twenty six Sophomore Alex Hamric shot a pair of seventy sixes for a two round total score of 152. Hamric tied for thirty sixth place. Concord returns to the courses Monday and Tuesday in the Mountain East Conference Fall Classic at Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia.
