So You Think You Can Greek Sing
It cannot be stressed enough that each and every fraternity and sorority that participated in the finale of Greek Week events did very well, and their hard work showed in their Greek Sing routines. It takes a lot of courage to dress up and perform for a crowd of one's classmates and peers. All the backbreaking hours of practice dancing and singing were fully felt in every aspect of Greek Sing this year.
Greek Sing occurred this year on Friday, April 24 at 8:00 P.M, though admissions began at 7:30. This was a good planning measure, as anyone wishing to get a decent seat would have been hard-pressed to do so if they had shown up 10 minutes before it started. The event kicked off with the Sorority Mash up Dances, followed by the Fraternity Lip Sync, and then the Sorority Sisterhood Songs.
The first sorority up was Sigma Sigma Sigma, and they provided a well-choreographed dance number. The woman leading them did a particularly good job. Their mashup had a military theme, and it was put to good use. Each of the girls had a dark green shirt with a spoof of the Army Strong advertising slogan. Their music choice was also fun, lively, and successfully energized the audience. Their Sisterhood Song was also well done. If there was one problem with it, it would be that the words to the song were muddled, but that is to be expected in a large gymnasium full of excitedly chattering students.
Next, Delta Zeta took the stage, also with a military theme. While it is not clear who came up with the idea of a military theme first, the fact that both the Sigmas and Delta Zeta’s mashups ended with the same song and the fact that Sigma Sigma Sigma went first hurt the Delta Zeta performance a little bit. This is not to say that they did not perform well. Their mashup was very fun to watch, and used a wide variety of songs. The most amusing part however came at the end when the men of Tau Kappa Epsilon came in at the end to deliver flowers and bid the Delta Zeta sisters to run with them in the Fall 2015 Homecoming events. The sisters accepted the invitation.
Alpha Sigma Alpha followed with a stellar mashup number. It was quite acrobatic and enjoyable to watch. The same could not be said for their Sisterhood Song. Using The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s theme song as a base would normally have sold it. Unfortunately, it simply did not seem work out. Despite this, the excellence of their mashup balanced out any misfortunes with their other performance.
Alpha Sigma Tau proved to be extremely competent and their mashup was a definite crowd pleaser. Their performance had the best sound mixing of all of the mashups, and the choreography was good as well. Their Sisterhood Song was also longer than the others, and they were loud enough to hear for this portion unlike the others, although again, this is excusable due to the location and magnitude of the event. While the sound was great, and the choreography was good, it did not really stand out as much as the others. In any case, they elicited the most cheers from the stands, so that alone is worth merit.
On the male side of the Greek Sing, Sigma Tau Gamma kicked things off by rocking out. The men looked like they had fun, and their dancing was on point. Unfortunately, their selection in music was perhaps a bit too loud and overwhelmed some members of the audience. Regardless, they looked like they had a good time, and their good nature rubbed off on the audience who also appeared to be enjoying themselves.
Following Sigma Tau Gamma was Tau Kappa Epsilon. If nothing else, Tau Kappa Epsilon knows how to keep people on their toes. This element of surprise was used to the fullest during their song. While their opening was a little shaky, they more than made up for it as their song progressed. It culminated with several members of the fraternity invading the floor dressed as bananas. Without saying too much, this stunt had the desired shock and humorous effect.
After Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Sigma Phi came out dressing snazzy and dancing to the tune of “Uptown Funk”. Their choreography was on point, and lip synching was perhaps the best of the night. However, there was an incident in which one of the Phi Sigs started to lose his suspenders. This distraction proved inconsequential though, and he finished through with the dance. Wardrobe malfunction aside, they did very well.
After much deliberation from the judges, Greek Week results were in. Alpha Sigma Alpha and Phi Sigma Phi won Greek Sing, and Sigma Sigma Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon won Greek Week overall. Greek Sing 2015 proved to be an enjoyable, lighthearted way to end Greek Week, and one can only hope that Greek Sing 2016 proves to be just as fun.
