It's Fun to Have Fun, But You've Got to Know How

Earlier in the semester, there was an opinion piece about everything that students can do in the area surrounding Concord University. Although there is definitely plenty to do in the area, there is also a lot to do on campus during the school year, contrary to popular belief.

All year long, Concord University is host to a wide variety of student activities, both those held by the university and those organized by student organizations. Most of these events are free, and those that are not free are usually a reasonable price.

To start, there is a huge number of student organizations on campus that are constantly doing things. At last count, there were over 80 registered student organizations at Concord, and each one is different. That means that there is a pretty good chance that a student can find a group that they fit in with. If not, it is very easy to start a new campus organization that caters to the interests and hobbies of particular students.

Some of the organization sponsored campus events include things like film society movie screenings, Bonner Scholar service projects, Greek life social functions, the International Students Banquet, and more.

The Student Government Association also hosts some big events on campus, such as the daily activities during homecoming and Spring Fling. Recently, they also had a big part in “Blues Brews & BBQs” on campus as well as “A Night on the Town” in Princeton.

In addition to student organizations, there are also events put on through different academic divisions and athletics that students can attend. Concord has a slew of sports teams like football, basketball, track and field, cross country, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, and golf. Going to sporting events allows students to get out of their dorm rooms while also cheering on their fellow Mountain Lions. Games are free with valid student IDs.

The Division of Fine Arts also holds a number of events. They often have plays, band and choir concerts, and student art shows going on throughout the year. These events are all free, although they do at times ask for donations for charitable organizations like animal shelters.

Of course the largest amount of activities on campus come straight from the Andrew Sulgit and the rest of the Student Activities Committee. Sulgit brings in a wide variety of events, so that students are bound to find something that they will enjoy.

Recent events sponsored by Student Activities have been concerts like Liverpool Legends, a Beetles tribute band, Zoso, the Led Zeppelin Experience, and numerous local bands. There have also been a number of comedians such as the Upright Citizens Brigade. In addition to these more normal activities, there has also been a snake handler, motorcycle stunt show, casino night, a hypnotist, and lots of free movie screenings of fairly new releases.

If students want more events on campus, then they have got to start coming to the events that are constantly going on. If students show their support for the various activities, they are much more likely to bring more of them in.

Students interested in Concord Athletics can check out the Athletics website www.cumountainlions.com or check out their Facebook page. The Student Activities Facebook page is www.facebook.com/concorduniversitystudentactivities. The Fine Arts Box office shares event info on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/cuboxoffice. Students can also check out individual organizations that they are interested in to get more involved.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see more student involvement on campus next year, because there’s definitely plenty to do!
