Study Tips from Professors
Finals. It’s the last thing that stands between you and graduation or winter break. As students, we drink way too much caffeine to survive finals week, stay up all night studying, and maybe even cry a little. So, what is the best way to prepare for finals week? We asked some of the professors at CU for their best study tips and here’s what they had to say.
Scott Ingrham, Assistant Professor of Social Work:
“A great general study tip is to start early and study in 45 minute intervals. Cramming the night before creates a stressful learning environment is less effective.”
Sally Howard, Professor of Political Science:
“Study with a friend so that you can quiz each other. When you review notes alone, your brain can trick you into thinking you know answers that you could not actually come up with if asked cold.”
Lindsey Akers, Instructor of Communication Arts:
“It will help if you figure out how to apply the things you are learning about to real life. Application is important when studying for a test.”
Lori Pace, Instructor of Criminology:
“Be organized. Lay out what final projects, assignments, and papers are due these last few weeks on a calendar with your final exam schedule. Do not wait until the last minute on anything, that never produces good work. And don’t forget how important a good night’s sleep is to optimum test performance. Luck favors the prepared! End strong.”
Jill Nolan, Associate Professor of Health Education:
“Eat well, Sleep, and get some exercise! Your studying will go much further if you also take care of yourself.”
Remember, all of your professors have been in your place before, so they know what you are experiencing. Start studying now, sleep, and eat well and your finals week will go that much smoother. Good luck!
