What to Do While Stuck in the Dorms
With cold weather gradually approaching, students will have to stay in their dorms a lot more. While there are plenty of ways to combat boredom, students should keep in mind these ageless methods.
Most people enjoy searching for movies and television shows through Netflix. Some stu-dents, however, can find it hard to keep up with monthly Netflix fees. One thing to remember is that Concord provides cable service. Dorm residents can watch sports broadcasts, popular shows such as “The Walking Dead,” or movies on the HBO channel. When cable television gets tire-some, though, one can rent a movie from the library here on campus. It holds a huge selection of movies ranging from classic to modern.
Video games are a great way to relax and take the mind off real life. Sometimes, though, playing video games alone is not good enough. Some might have games that they enjoy replay-ing, but those might not cut it in those random bouts of boredom. This would be an ideal time to play some fun multiplayer games like “Halo,” “Call of Duty,” “Mortal Combat,” or “Mario Par-ty.” With the competition sparked from playing games live with friends, there will be no bore-dom in the room.
If a bunch of friends are going to be in the same dorm, why not make it interesting? Sing-ing along to popular or beloved tunes always brings out a laugh or two. Other times, people dis-cover that they have great vocals. All you really need to have is a phone, access to YouTube, and a speaker. If participants feel like it, they can also be recorded on video for a post on social media.
Card games have the potential to be an amazing pastime. As always, there are the classic games one with a deck of regular cards can play, including “Texas Hold ‘Em,” “Blackjack,” and “War.” If friends are willing, a poker night in the dorm room can even be arranged. Alternative card games like “Cards Against Humanity” and “UNO,” though, can be just as fun. Given the numerous variations on all these games, card games have the potential to entertain for hours and can be really engaging, making it hard for everyone to stay bored.
Although storytelling may seem like an uncommon way to kill boredom, it still works. This method can be an opportunity to sharpen some creativity, whether it is done for a creative writing class or just for fun. Everyone in the room can create scary scenarios and, or maybe very hilarious ones. That is, unless participants would rather tell some real stories, in which case, things might be infinitely more engaging for the group story session.
