Concord’s Homecoming Schedule of Events
Prepare to make to unforgettable memories as the Homecoming Week of 2017 is upon us. Once again the beloved traditions of Homecoming Week here at Concord University will be accompanied with plenty of other exhilarating activities.
The Homecoming schedule of events kicked off with bears to build, on Monday, in the Student Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Later at 9 p.m., Blacklight Bingo was held in the Student Center Ballroom.
Tuesday was the first day to vote on the candidates for Homecoming King and Queen. The voting started at 10 a.m. and went until 2 p.m. in the Student Center, and continued later from 4-6 p.m. Voting also took place on Wednesday during the same times, and will continue today during the same hours. A free Homecoming t-shirt is given to anyone who votes. Due to the limited supply of shirts however, anyone who wants one should vote as soon as possible.
Tuesday was also accompanied with an Arrow Attack game from 3-8 p.m. in The Valley. In this game, people can battle each other with Nerf arrows.
The excitement continued Wednesday with a “Guitar Hero” event at 7 p.m. in The Valley. People were able to compete against each other on a big screen. After that there was an outdoor showing of “Annabelle: Creation” at 8 p.m.
Like usual, Thursday will consist of the Homecoming Parade which will start at 6 p.m. on Vermillion Street, and be followed afterwards by a pep-rally and a bonfire in The Valley. This year there will be a DJ for musical entertainment, along with games and prizes. There will also be a fundraiser done by the Student Athletic Activities Committee, people will get to pie coaches in the face.
After enjoying those exciting events, everybody can go to the Main Gym on Friday to watch the Lip Sync for the organizations. This event will start at 8 p.m., and anybody who goes is sure to enjoy the performances by each organization.
To finish off Homecoming Week will be the Saturday Homecoming Football Game, which will take place at 1 p.m. in the Callaghan Stadium. During the halftime show, the winning candidates for Homecoming King and Queen are announced and have their coronation.
David Griffin Stone, Vice President of the SGA, hopes to stand out this Homecoming by doing something previous vice presidents have never done before. He feels this goal will be accomplished from the showing of “Annabelle: Creation”, seeing how a horror movie has never been shown on a big screen in the Valley before.
Andrew Sulgit, Director of Student Union Activity II, along with the SGA, hopes that student participation for Homecoming increases this year. He says that they’re very optimistic about this Homecoming Week. Homecoming Week has been promoted through social media as a means of informing people to come out.
SGA does the task of deciding which events should go along with the traditional ones during Homecoming Week. Sulgit then helps by getting in touch with contacts and using resources to implement the events for Homecoming Week. Along with organizing the events for Homecoming, SGA also has to check the budget for various things such as t-shirts, food, and entertainment for the events. They even check with past Homecomings to see how much money was spent to compare. The past Homecomings are seen to SGA as what Stone would call “blueprints” for planning future Homecomings. Stone says that a lot of the planning for Homecoming Week revolves mainly around the budget SGA has to work with.
Seeing how Homecoming is always a big event for Concord University, many people are sure to enjoy the events that this week has to offer. Sulgit says, “College is of course about getting degrees, but there’s also a lot of other things it’s about too. I think Homecoming is one of those times, or important [college] is also about.” Stone’s favorite part about Homecoming is all the memories and the “good vibes” that come from experiencing the events. “It’s good to see that the students are getting out of their dorms and doing things making memories and making this feel a lot more like a home as opposed to a school”, says Stone with a lively tone.
