August 31, Concord University’s football team played in their first season game packing the Callaghan Stadium. Students and faculty came out to support the Mountain Lions, and despite the tight loss of 23 to 18 to the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, the overall CU spirit remained.

With the game starting off strong, freshman defensive back, Jonathan Roebuck, had swept the ball from Wesleyan. Meanwhile, quarterback, Ryan Deal, ran it back 30 yards scoring the first points of the game at the 10:51 mark of the first quarter. The Bobcat’s followed by converting a short field goal off the clock at 7:07. By the end of the first half, the Mountain Lions faced a 20-6 intermission deficit.

Starting the third quarter, Concord took an offensive miscue after the Bobcat’s receiver lost the ball. Jeremiah Johnson, senior defensive back, ran the ball to the end zone for a 25 yard fumble return, making the Concord deficit 20 to 12 with 8:44 remaining. As the fourth quarter began, the Bobcat’s opened off with the ball until junior quarterback, Jake Gibson, with the first career CU touchdown.

Cheerleader, Chelsea Goins comments on her overall thoughts of the game, “This season felt different than any before with the first game being on a Thursday night. Although it was different, it was great! Being under the stadium lights while cheering on the Mountain Lions again just gave a different type of excitement for the season.” Goins was thrilled with the turnout and engagement with the Concord students for the first home game, and is looking forward to future games.

With a close game, the Bobcats took the win against the CU Mountain Lions. Their next game will be Tonight, Sept. 7, at 7:00 P.M in Charleston as they take on University of Charleston’s Golden Eagles.
