PSA: Concord, A Smoke-Free Campus?

By Garrett Cole
On November 17, 2016

Concord University is a great place of education, community and work ethic, but does it come with a risk to your health? Professor James White’s introduction to political science course is on a mission this semester, with health on their minds. Though there are a number of tobacco smoking regulations at Concord, such as state and federal laws about smoking within buildings as well as signs of awareness to not smoke within a number of feet from the entrances of all Concord University buildings, there is no true initiative for students and staff to quit smoking for the health of the campus and of themselves.

This Community Action Project is composed of a group of students who want to see a campus that strives for better health in a state that is largely known for obesity and other poor health issues. Among these is a notably high level of lung cancer patients that can likely be directly linked to the high tobacco intake of West Virginia citizens. Concord University could be a leader in reaching out to its students and pointing out the health and financial benefits to stop smoking, but they cannot do it alone. These young men and women of this project need your assistance in beginning this new and exciting health revolution for Concord University. A petition was opened to the public from Tuesday November 8 until Tuesday November 15 for people to pledge their name towards this great cause.
