Sink it for the Heart

A well-known party game was used for a good cause during Sigma Sigma Sigma’s fifth annual water pong tournament. Twenty-one teams participated in the tournament that was held on April 15 at 6 p.m. in the Sigma Lodge on the Athens campus.

The tournament was originally created to raise money for a sinkhole that was in the Sigma Lodge’s back yard, and the original name of the event was “Sink it for the Sink Hole.” This year the event was focusing on a charitable cause.

All proceeds from registration and event t-shirts went to the family of Jimmy Lowe III, a Concord student whose younger brother was born with tetralogy of fallot, a common congenital heart defect that led to him needing corrective heart surgery.

"I thought the tournament went great this year. We had an amazing turnout. I really couldn't have pulled it off alone. I had so much help from getting the water to the lodge and keeping brackets straight, to refereeing the games and showing up with extra tables. The only thing I can say is that I hope it gets bigger and better next year," said Sarah White, the Sigma Sigma Sigma sister who organized the event.

The prize for winning the tournament was a twenty five dollar Applebees gift card that was to be shared by the members of the teams.

Some of the creative names of teams that were knocked out of the bracket included Scared Shotless, Campus Power Couple, Team Ramrod, Dead Frat Society, and Ball Busters.

The tournament used standard 10 cup pong rules, with teams of two heading off. Three teams made it into a final round of double elimination for the title of champions.

The final two teams playing for the championship were team Flying Squirrel made up of Joe Nelson and Brady Nolan, and team Chaucer 216-100 made up of Phillip Campbell and Mason Stuter. Team Flying Squirrel won the title of Sigma Sigma Sigma Water Pong 2015 champions.
