Sweet Silver Screenings
Looking for fun, free entertainment to battle the college student blues? If so, check out the multitude of free movies that are shown on Concord’s campus by Student Activities every semester.
Concord’s Student Activities Committee, run by Andrew Sulgit, puts on a large amount of events during the semester. One thing that Sulgit normally brings in a few times a semester are large group showings of newer movies.
“The movies we try to get, we try to get before they come out on DVD. When I was in college I didn’t always have the money to catch it in the theatres or rent it. So we try to do it because it gives you the opportunity to watch newly released movies on site,” said Sulgit, Director of Student Activities, the Student Center, Greek Affairs, and Special Events.
Not only are these showings of movies conveniently shown right on Concord’s campus, but students do not have to buy tickets for the shows. “If it’s a movie you have interest in you should go. It costs nothing directly to students, and most times we offer popcorn and candy to the first so many in attendance,” said Sulgit.
There are some types of movies that students are likely to see on campus, although they are definitely not the only ones. “Generally anytime a ‘Lord of the Rings’ one comes out we try to get an advanced copy of that. We try to get a big blockbuster for orientation. And we always try to secure a licensed copy of ‘The Big Lewbowski’ for Lewbowski Fest,” Sulgit explained.
There’s still one more movie coming up this semester, and then students will get to look forward to movies for next year. “American Sniper is probably the final one of the semester. I don’t know the exact release date at the moment. A lot of times I’m kind of doing them on the fly to get the newest release date,” he admits.
It’s hard to tell when these showings will pop up next year though, so students will have to look out for them. “A lot depends on the type of movie we want and the release date. It’s just really dependent on what they tell me. For orientation it is dependent on what I can get guaranteed in time,” Sulgit says.
The movies are a little harder to get for showings such as these because the University has to purchase a certain type of copy. “We also purchase these viewings of it because we’re obligated to uphold the laws. Any public performance of it you’re obligated to get a licensed copy of it,” says Sulgit.
If you’re worried about not liking the movie being shown, Sulgit has a plan for that. “I try to stick with movies that have a wider appeal,” he promised.
Although the movies have no definite location until closer to the date they are being shown, they are generally in the same few places on campus. “We a lot of the time will do them up in the ballroom. Sometimes in admin 237 or Subway Sides instead. Sometimes it depends on the movie or availability,” Sulgit said.
