Spooktacular is a scary success

The Fine Arts Division hit the nail on the head this year at Spooktacular, a Halloween-themed event featuring musical performances, costume contests, and a good old fashioned haunted house.

Spooktacular was comprised of several musical performances courtesy of Concord University’s band, choir, and several other individual performances. First, the band sauntered on stage, each member dressed to the nines in elaborate costumes. From zombies to pirates to fairy god parents, there was a costume for all tastes.

Next, several other acts took the stage, including a piano/drum duo, an elaborate shadow dance, a piano solo, and a creative satyr flute performance. Finally, the Conchords took the stage and gave a riveting choral performance that ended with a crowd pleasing rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” led by Batman, more commonly known as Cody Boone.

The costume contest featured some fierce competition this year. The event was crammed with everything from horrifying clowns and monsters to beloved characters from different televisions shows and movies. The judges faced the daunting task of narrowing the incredible display to just three winners, and it was not an easy choice. Ultimately, they came to a consensus and announced the winners. In third place was Cassie Molchanoff and her endearing “sizzling bacon” costume. Second place was awarded to Chance Rader, the full-fledged Viking warrior. Finally, in first place was Samuel Whittaker and his Mad Hatter costume that bore a striking resemblance to Johnny Depp’s actual character in the 2010 Alice in Wonderland remake. Each winner was given a special T-shirt and a monetary prize. Although there were only three prizes given, each contender clearly put a lot of thought and effort into their costumes and the competition was incredibly close.

The Fine Arts Division put a lot of time and effort into making this year’s Spooktacular the most successful one so far. They spent weeks rehearsing performance pieces, creating Concord’s famous Haunted Hall, and selling tickets to the event. In total, the event raised more than $530 for the division.

Spooktacular is one of the most anticipated events of the fall semester, and this year certainly didn’t disappoint. Everyone involved left satisfied; members of the joint Concord and Athens community were able to have a night of inexpensive, family-friendly fun, and the Fine Arts Division saw all their hard work pay off and raised even more money than anticipated.
