A jazz night at CU

Concord students enjoyed another dazzling performance at Subway Sides on Monday by JAMS (Jazz at the Monday Spot). The show started out with a soft piano intro which was soon joined by the vocals of Cody Boone. Soon the jazz was kicking in with guitar and flute. Finally, things got even better when Roman Runyon came in with the drums.

The first song lasted for good while, throughout which there were some moments where all instruments ceased except for the drums, then they would start playing again. There was even a moment during the second song of their line-up during which Cody Boone played a six-string electric guitar. This gave the music that was being played a little more feel.

They also did covers of some classic artists like Van Morrison and Billy Joel. They covered the Billy Joel song “Just the Way You Are” as a full instrumental cover. As for Van Morrison, they covered the classic song “Moondance.”

Hopefully anyone who missed the performance weren’t Beatles fans. The highlight of the evening performance were their fabulous covers of some Beatles favorites. They started out with Paul McCartney’s famous ballad “Yesterday”. Though it was a cover, it still had the same feel as the actual song. The melody of the song with a flute added made the song moving, just like when Paul McCartney plays it. They proceeded to play the classic “Blackbird.” This cover was pleasant with finger picking of the acoustic guitar with some good vocals. And to finish the show, they impressed the audience with a great cover of “Let It Be.” It had the same feel as the actual Beatles version where the piano intro and the first verse of the song start the song. The song then started to take off when Roman came in with the drums. The flow of the song was smooth with the combination of the vocals, drums, guitar, and flute. When it came to the vocals for these covers, Cody did a great job singing the lyrics. These guys altogether undoubtedly did the Beatles justice.

It was also announced during the show that the big jazz concert will take place on November 4 in the Alexander Fine Arts Auditorium. It will follow the percussion ensemble that will also that night. This Monday performance was only a taste what JAMS is capable of performing. The jazz concert is something that one wouldn’t want to miss.
