CU sweeps Winston-Salem State
The Concord University volleyball cruised to a three-set win over Winston-Salem State (25-12, 25-21, 25-17) Saturday evening in non-conference action at the Carter Center.
Concord moves its record to 14-12 this season while WSSU fell to 11-12 on the year.
The Mountain Lions were able to jump out to a 10-2 advantage in the first set as they eased to a 13-point victory in the first game. Freshman outside Lisette Roldan paced the Mountain Lions with five kills in the first set
CU received a little more resistant from the Rams in the second set as Concord never trailed, but they never led by more than six points either. The Mountain Lions finished off Winston-Salem State by rolling through the third set and winning by eight points.
The biggest difference in the game was Concord’s ability to play a clean match. The Mountain Lions committed only 10 attack errors compared to WSSU’s 27 attack errors.
Additionally, CU hit .292 for the match, the highest percentage they have hit since they hit .333 against WVU Tech four matches ago.
Freshman middle hitter Sarah Jones and Rolden each finished with 11 kills. Rolden hit .409 for the match while Jones registered .360 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Nikki McMillan led the Mountain Lions with 19 assists. Senior outside hitter Brytni Willis finished one kill shy of a double-double as she had nine kills and a team-high 13 digs.
CU will return to action and Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Tuesday when they host UVa.-Wise to close out its nine-game homestand.
