Looking for a getaway to entertainment with cin- ematic films? Look no further than the Concord Film Society.

Each week the Concord Film Society reels out a movie from the ever expanding library of cinema. One week it could be a classic horror flick and an international film the next. All the while, movies that reside in the mainstream are avoided. The people in the Concord Film Society try to choose from a variety of films to show week after week. For this current se- mester, they kicked things off with “The Big Sleep”. Following that was “Ghost World”, and for the week that just ended, they showed “Dead Man’s Shoes”.

This week the Film Society will be presenting a Hollywood classic known as “Sunset Boulevard”. Dr. Charles Brichford, CU Professor and Division Chair of English, gave a quick preview of “Sunset Boulevard”. “Sunset Boulevard” is a black and white film directed by Billy Wilder and was released in 1950. The cast stars Gloria Swanson as the main character who lives in a lonely Beverly Hills mansion. Co-starring as her butler is the famous silent movie director Erich von Stroheim. This film also stars William Holden in more of an early performance. He would later go on to become a famous star of the 50’s. Dr. Brichford classifies this film as psychodrama. This films starts out with a mysterious scene that sets things in motion. Without any spoilers, all that can be said is that there’s a body found in the pool of a Beverly Hills mansion. Dr. Brichford stated, “I’m not spoiling things for anybody, because they’ll find out in the first 15 seconds [of the movie].”

As for ratings and rewards, this movie was awarded in multiple categories. The AMC Filmsite, written and edited by Tim Dirks, revealed many fun facts pertaining to the movie’s popularity. “Sunset Boulevard” was such a great movie it won three Oscars. There was one for best writing, another for best sets, and one for best musical score.

Following the showing of “Sunset Boulevard”, viewers like usual are welcome to discuss the movie. Dr. Brichford agrees watching these films shown by the Concord Film Society provide somewhat of an educational value. He said, “The thing that got me started on the study of films was going to ones that were being shown at the college I attended.” With that said, you can always learn something es- sential from watching movies.

Dates for which the movie will be shown are September 25-27 in room A237 of the Marsh Hall Building. Showing times for the movies are 5:00 and 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, 3:30 P.M. on Friday, and 6:00 P.M. on Saturday. If this Hollywood classic sounds like something that would satisfy your taste for cinema, then feel free to go watch it.
