Student Affairs is here to help

Student Affairs would like to welcome all new and returning students to Concord! Particularly for freshmen and transfer students, the start of the academic year can appear overwhelming.

Everything is new friends, living arrangements, faculty, ad- ministrative offices and procedures- even knowing where to park can be a problem.

Yet whether new to campus or a returning student, it’s important to get off to a great start. Your time is often split between first assignments, attending campus organization interest meetings, finding student employment, and sometimes adjusting your course schedule. Meanwhile, you may worry about making friends, or even feel a little homesick.

Fortunately while your focus in on many different things, Student Affairs is focused only on you.

So what IS Student Affairs? Student Affairs, or Student Life as it’s sometimes called, is a group of individuals who provide out-of-classroom services and programs. Some of our offerings include professional counseling, academic support, career guidance, disability services, volunteer service opportunities, campus organizations and Greek Life, Housing & Residence Life, and so much more.

Student Affairs even operate the Game Room and provide night and weekend program- ming and off-campus trips that all can join. And just about everything is free with your Concord Student I.D.!

There are a couple of Student Affairs offices that you should immediately know. The Counseling Center is located on the second f loor of the Bonner House (behind Sarvay Hall). Counselor David Bailey, MA, AADC-S, LSW, is available for appoint- ments by calling 304-384-5290. The center is open M-F 9 am-4

pm, or you can request an after-hours appointment.

Because the Counseling Center is not handicap accessible, Mr. Bailey is available to meet at an accessible location with prior scheduling.

The Academic Success Center (ASC) just off of the Rahall Atrium is a one-stop-shop, meaning that staff can assist you with basically any issue you have—or direct you to the appropriate resource.

If the ASC staff is unable to help directly, they guarantee to point you in the right direction. The ASC focuses on understanding retention at Concord University and ensuring students are informed of the programs that the university offers to aid in aca- demic success.

Need help? Simply stop by Rahall 234, call 304-384-6074, or email asc@concord.edu.

Students interested in tutoring should visit Student Support Ser- vices (SSS), located in Room 202 of the Student Center. SSS offersfree tutoring to all students, as well as more intensive services to the 200 students each year who are participants in this federally- funded TRIO program.

If you receive a PELL grant or Federal Work Study, you may qualify for SSS. Stop in the office, phone 304-384-6088, or email support@concord.edu.

For Sponsored or Drop-In Tu- toring, a schedule is created at the beginning of each academic term listing who tutors a particular subject, where, and when.

Most tutoring occurs in the Library, but other sites--such as the Student Center Study Lounge--are popular options. Sponsored tutoring is on a walk- in, first-come first-served basis. Students who need assistance may see Beth Nelson in the SSS office

Tutoring schedules can be accessed online via https://apps. concord.edu/tutoring/ or at the Circulation Desk in the Marsh Library (print copy).

The Student Affairs office is located in the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center, Room 200. Dr. Marjie Flanigan is Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students and also Title IX Coordinator.

Title IX involves discrimina- tion based on gender and also deals with sexual violence of any kind. To meet with Dr. Flanigan, students are welcome to walk-in, email (mf lanigan@concord.edu), and/or call (304-384-6035).

Mr. Rick Dillon is the Associ- ate Dean of Students, as well as the Vice President of Adminis- tration. He also invites students to stop by his office, located in the same Student Affairs/Office of Housing and Residence Life suite—Student Center Room 200, or email rdillon@concord. edu.

Once again, Student Affairs welcomes all students and wishes you a successful semester! Please let us know how we can improve student life at CU!
