The Scoop on the SAC
Last week, this reporter sat down with Andrew Sulgit, Di- rector of Student Activities, and gave us the scoop on this semester’s upcoming campus events.
Q: How do you feel about the scheduled events for this semester?
A: I think we have a great cal- endar planned, continuing the activities that have worked, modifying the ones that didn’t, and planning new and exciting events that have never come to campus before!
Q: What activities does SAC have planned?
A:We will continue favorites such as Blacklight Bingo, Duck
Hunt and the TalentSphere, but also add a bunch of comedians, a mentalist, local and regional musicians, and even new stuff like a group that does fire-jug- gling! Anything that has been successful in the past, we will keep, and only try to add things and make events bigger and better!
Q: In the recent past, two tribute bands have debuted at Concord, should students anticipate larger venues on campus?
A: I absolutely intend on con- tinuing the big Spring concert. One thing that was discussed at SGA this past year was poten- tially implementing a “Concert Fee”, a small amount of money per student that would be used exclusively for “big name” concerts and comedians and such. If we had such a fee in place, many nationally known acts would be within our reach. I have a lot of contact informa- tion for major national talent, but many of the bands you’ve heard on the radio, or comedi- ans you seen on TV, command very high costs. I know of a lot of big name bands that could play shows on their way to other cities, if that fee were a reality. Q: How does one go about joining the Student’s Activi- ties Committee (SAC)?
A: Contact me by email (Sulgit@concord.edu) and I will be happy to give more information.
Q: What does being a SAC member entail?
A: Helping to plan and implement activities on campus, and being a key part of shaping a successful campus activities program.
Q: Why should students join SAC?
A: Campus activities are really for the students, and as such, I think having a direct link to planning them would be ap- pealing to all students.
Q: Why should students participate in activities and attend events?
A: College is about many things; but many of my favorite memories from college pertained to the campus activities I participated in. Being active, seeing new things, meeting new people – all of these are important parts of college, and participating in activities and events are big parts of this.
Q: What are some of the upcoming events?
A: Just in the next month alone, we have nationally known motorcycle stunt team “Stunt Army” doing demonstrations at the football field parking lot, nationally known comedian Arvin Mitchell (from BET’s Club Comic View), a rafting trip on the New River, a “Club Night” in North Tower (in con- junction with Residence Life), Appalachian rock-band “Black King Coal”, Roanoke-area based musicians “The Floor- boards”, an end-of-Summer- themed Duck Hunt for big prizes, movies, give-aways, and more.
