Recent changes on campus inspire greener lifestyle

Towards the end of the second summer session, the university posted signs in- forming students that they must provide their own paper for printing.

Although this change came abruptly with very short notice for students, a mass email was sent to each student explaining why free paper was no longer provided.

Basically the email stated that the university wanted to eliminate wastefulness when it comes to paper products, and shrink their carbon footprint.

The email expressed that approximately $12,000 worth on printer paper was used by students, and nearly $50,000 campus wide.

The press release closed with a statement saying, “... This not only makes financial sense, but is also environmentally responsible.”

With that being said, even if you agree or disagree with the new policy, environmental health should be a concern to everyone and a part of everyday lives.

To ensure the quality of life that comes along with an abundance of natural re- sources to future generations, we must all do what is neces- sary and within our power to protect the Earth. As college students, it could be hard to find the time, and spend the extra cash to go green. So here are a few ways that you can ef- ficiently live a “greener” life.

Walk More- If you live near campus, try to avoid driving to campus for class. Wake up a little earlier and walk. Walking is obviously good for your per- sonal health, as well as for the environment.

Carry a Reusable Water Bottle- By eliminating plastic drink containers from your everyday life, you could help avoid unnecessary waste in landfills, and save money by filling your bottle from one of the water fountains on campus.

Take Shorter Showers- Like Momma always said, “scrub it till it’s clean, then get out.”

Avoid Wasted Paper- Let’s take a note from the “Concord School of Environmental Affairs” and limit the amounts

of paper you use on a daily basis. Try taking notes on your laptop, or tablet, use your jump drive to save material, and do not print unless necessary.

Recycle- There are recycling receptacles in every building on campus—use them.

Conserve Energy- unplug all your electronic devices when they are charged. Avoid wasting energy. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Also, wear weather appropriate clothing to avoid extra heating cooling energy.

Skip Plastic Bags- when you go to the grocery store, take your own reusable shopping bags. They are one dollar a piece at most grocery stores.

Go Outside- Put down all electronics and find fun, cre- ative activities that you can do outside.

These tips are among many ways that can lead to living a “greener” lifestyle.
