
Mountain East Conference: Sports Round Up
Mens Cross Country— The Concord University men’s cross country team took victory Saturday morning at Pipestem State Park, at the Concord Alumni race. Senior Justin Snyder took his second individual win over the meet with a time of 26:52. Following Snyder, Junior Michael Ruhnke completed with a time of 27:01 placing second. Senior Tyler Kosut claimed third with his time of 27:20, and freshman Samuel Hayes took on fifth place with a time of 27:36. Junior Jacob Ashcraf rounded out the scoring runners placing ninth for the Mountain Lions with a time of 28:40. In the top 15 qualifiers for CU were two freshman, Andrew Barbera placing 10th with a time of 29:21 and Raheem Williams placing 12th with a time of 29:47. Concord has scored 17 points in the meet, with West Liberty claiming runner up with a total of 56 points.
As of Oct. 10 the team still holds fourth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Atlantic Regional Poll for a third straight week. The Mountain Lions next meet will take place October 21 at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex for the Mountain East Conference Championships.
Women’s Cross Country— The Concord University women’s cross country team put seven runner in the top 10 qualifiers taking victory at the Concord Alumni meet Saturday morning at Pipestem State Park. Freshman Sydney Haynes took the individual win completing the 5,000 meter course with a time of 19:29. Sophomore Aidan Payton claimed second with a time of 19:48. Junior Bailey Knowles placed fourth at the meet with a time of 20:04 with junior Kenna Knowles running a time of 21:26 taking sixth place. Sophomore Kate Golinsky followed four seconds later placing seventh. Junior Kaylin Kessinger recorded a time of 22:04 taking eighth place. Juniors Karleigh Thompson, and Taylor Hamm took ninth and 10th place with times of 22:12 and 22:25 completing the top 10 for the Mountain Lions. Freshman Lindsey Cummings placed 17th with a time of 24:48 and junior Catrina Russell placing 25th stopping the clock at 27:40. The Mountain Lions next meet will take place October 21 at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex at the Mountain East Conference Championship.
Women’s Soccer— The Concord University women’s soccer team overthrew Charleston 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference at Anderson Field. Junior forward Pilar Elias’ goal sent the Mountain Lions in Victory. Freshman forward Sarah Hill gained control of the ball, and served the ball to freshman midfielder Courtney Wallace. Wallace then sent a pass in front of the net with Elias running towards the goal, sneaking past goalkeeper Zoe Zyta for Charleston who made 11 previous saves during the game. Elias recorded four shots on the goal for the Mountain Lions, with Hill adding three and sophomore defender Delaney Crumblish notching two. Their next game takes place today at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Field.
Men’s Soccer— The Concord University men’s soccer team took a tough loss (3-0) to the number one team in the nation in Charleston Sunday afternoon in the Mountain East conference at Anderson Field. The Charleston’s Gold Eagles scored within the first 10 minutes of the game taking a 1-0 advantage. Concord held up their defense for the remainder of the first half with the score still 1-0 at intermission. Two minutes into the second half Charleston scored off a deflection in front of the net, and shortly after added the third goal on a free kick with 30 seconds left into the game. Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Brown stopped eight shots for Concord. The Mountain Lions next game will take place today at 3:30 p.m. as they host Notre Dame.
Men’s Golf— The Concord University Athletic Department has released the seventh annual golf tournament at Fountain Springs in Peterstown, West Virginia on October 13. Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. October 13 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. There will be a free provided lunch for all participants in the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place qualifiers as well as the top three closet to pin and top the three longest drives. Softball— The Concord University softball team released a scheduled alumni game to be taken place Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the CU Softball Field. The game will be taken part of the festivities of Homecoming week.
