Mountain East Conference: Sports Round Up
Football— The Mountain East Conference recognized Concord University’s senior defensive back Jeremiah Johnson and senior punter Garrett Lee as Players of the Week on Monday, September 18. Johnson earned his title with two interceptions, one that was run back for a touchdown—Concord’s only score—completing their 7-0 win over UVa.-Wise last Thursday night. Lee was recognized for his nine punts in the game averaging out to 41.4 yards, with three punts of over 40 yards and five landing inside the 20-yard line. The Mountain Lions improve to 1-2 season and also 1-2 in the MEC. Their next game will be Saturday, as they take on the Falcons at Notre Dame.
Men’s Soccer— Concord University men’s soccer team lost their game September 17, against Notre Dame at Mueller Field. Goalkeeper Michael
Adedigba had three saves in the goal along with freshman goalkeeper Kyle Brown stopping six shots for Concord. Their next game takes place on September 24, as they take on Urbana, Ohio .
Women’s Soccer— Concord University women’s soccer took a tough 3-1 loss against the Notre Dame Falcons, on the Muller field this past Sunday. Forward Sarah Hill made her first goal of the season less than seven minutes into the game. Defender Ali Cook sent a free kick into the box setting up Hill’s goal into the bottom left corner of the goal. Notre Dame Falcons scored their first goal 15 minutes before halftime tying the game only to score the last two goals in the final 10 minutes. The Mountain Lions’ next home game is set for October 8 as they take on Charleston University.
Women’s Cross Country— Concord University women’s cross country team finished 15th at the Stegemoller Classic that included teams in Division II. Freshman Sydney Haynes was the top finisher for Concord, placing 40th with a time of 19:15 for the 5,000-meter course. Sophomore Aidan Payton finished at 70th with a time of 20:21. Scoring runner junior Karleigh Thompson completed with a time of 20:49, followed by sophomore Kate Golinsky with a record time of 21:20 and junior Bailey Knowles with a time of 21:23. Junior Kaylin Kessinger was 11 seconds behind Knowles, and junior Taylor Hamm followed with 21:37. Nationally ranked teams Lee and Queens along with Division I Murray State, Northern Kentucky, SIU-Edwardsville and Tennessee-Martin were all in the meet this past Saturday morning.
The Mountain Lions’ next meet will take place September 29 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Volleyball— The Concord University volleyball team defeated Bluefield State on September 19 at the Carter Center. The team improved to a 5-9 overall taking the sets 25-8, 25-9, 25-13. Middle hitter Brooke Heck had two kills while senior outside hitter Felicia Huerta, sophomore outside hitter Ellie Lawrence, and junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus each had one kill. During the first set, Emily Ellis and Heck combined for nine kills on 12 chances. The second game continued going back and forth until the end of the set. Tied at 15-15, Concord finished the game on a 10-4 run. Outside hitter Kerrigan Fritz and Pranckus combined for four kills and Ellis and outside hitter Kirsti Pouncy each had one. The teams’ next game will take place this friday against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Golf—The Concord University Athletic Department announced October 13 as the date for the seventh annual golf tournament at Fountain Springs in Peterstown, West Virginia. To register for the tournament, email athletics@concord.edu, call 304-384-5440, or fax 304-384-5117.
