Tutoring Services Offered At Concord
Concord offers free drop-in peer tutoring in a variety of courses, from music to chemistry, multiple times during the week. All student tutors are recommended by faculty and have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Tutoring offers individuals assistance in schoolwork to help students achieve academic success in specific skills. The ultimate goal of tutoring is to foster independence and personalized study habits. Study skills, time management, stress management, organization, effective reading and note-taking, test-taking, and understanding how to use a syllabus are all benefits of attending tutoring.
Two types of tutoring are available: drop-in tutoring and one-on-one tutoring. Drop-in tutoring is available to any student currently enrolled at Concord University with no appointment necessary. One-on-one tutoring is offered exclusively to those students who participate in the SSS program and can be arranged though Student Support Service’s academic coordinator.
Tutoring takes place from noon until 9pm, Monday through Thursday, with the majority of tutoring being offered in the GRIP Center on the ground floor of the Rahall building. Additionally, tutoring is available for select hours in the library as well as the student study lounge in the Student Center.
Beth Sampson, academic coordinator in Student Support Services, has this to say about the tutoring program at Concord: “I find that students are sometimes in need of tutoring but embarrassed to ask for help. Keep in mind that students with good grades use tutoring. Tutors even seek assistance from one another. Please take advantage of this program, whether you need someone to proof a paper, help you study for a test, or just clarify something you didn’t fully understand in class.”
Even high-achieving and motivated students can benefit from tutoring by improving their learning efficiency. Sometimes a classroom setting is not enough for a student to learn all of the material necessary to in order to pass a test or to proceed on to higher level courses. Student-to-student tutoring is a confidential and helpful way for students to study, with the help of those who have already taken the class before them.
This semester’s tutoring schedule is available at the Student Support Service’s office on the main floor of the Student Center. The schedule is also available online at https://apps.concord.edu/tutoring/.
Any questions about tutoring should be directed to the Academic Success Center, asc@concord.edu, (304) 384-6074, or the Student Support Center, (304) 384-5274.
