A.T. Program Students Win Quiz Bowl Competition
On March 3, seniors Olivia Reilly and Berkeley Lowe and junior Brittany Domingo, representatives of Concord University Athletic Training Program won the West Virginia Quiz Bowl Competition. The West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Conference (further WVATA conference) took place in Flatwoods W.Va.
“Everyone in the Athletic Training Program has a chance to go to the conference and I believe we had 15 people attend this year,” says Brittany Domingo, one of three winners from Concord. “When it came to selecting who would represent Concord in the Quiz Bowl our program director, John Roberts, Director of Athletic Training Program at Concord, and the senior class decided on the two seniors - Olivia Reilly and Berkley Lowe - and then myself as the junior so I can also represent us next year at the conference.”
Olivia Reilly, one of senior winners points that it is never easy going up against school’s that have more of a renowned name like WVU and Marshall, “But at the end of the day we’re all students of A.T. [Athletic Training] and learn the same material. The quiz bowl team had been practicing for weeks before the competition so we felt very confident going in.” To prepare for it, three of the girls got together once a week and studied various topics that they didn’t feel confident about.
“It was challenging at some points during the competition due to other schools staying close behind us in points but in the end we came out way ahead of everyone,” says Domingo. “The experience was great to be a part of and even better since we get to go on to represent Concord and District 3 at the MAATA, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Training Association.”
Concord University won the quiz bowl two years ago. “It’s important to us because it shows that our program is just as good if not better than the other programs around the state,” says Domingo. Reilly points that “this year we were ahead most of the game and then still managed to get the final jeopardy question and win! It is super awesome because it shows the other schools in the state that are bigger and have more of a budget that we can still hang with them.”
Seniors Reilly and Lowe also presented their posters but they didn’t make it to top three, even though “the judges seemed to be intrigued by our poster,” as Reilly notes.
The winners will represent the state of West Virginia in May at the Mid-Atlantic Quiz Bowl Competition in Virginia Beach. The girls are excited for the opportunity to represent Concord at the district meeting in May.
