What Do You Think Of Our Presidential Candidates?
Election Day is approaching us quickly. Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard about the presidential candidates and their seemingly endless bombardment of publicity. However, the president and the election is to be for the people by the people. So the Concordian took to the streets of Concord University’s campus to find out how students feel about this year’s election.
Porsha Thompson states, “I feel that it’s not an honorable election. Our options are not as worthy as they should be to run the country. I do feel that Hillary is the best choice.”
Another Clinton supporter, Trace Crum, states, “I feel we will have a huge change in this world with our first ever woman president. It is showing us how accepting our Country has [become]. She is opened minded and is appeasing to our younger nation. I feel like, she will actually let us have rights instead of taking them away.”
Trump supporter Michael Stover states, “In general, I don’t think that this is turning into a good race. I think that the campaigns are more on who can smear who more instead of the policy the candidates are wanting to instate. Trump is my preferred candidate.”
Kristen Osborne: “To be honest, I don’t care for politics. I know that we need them to survive as a country, but I can’t stand politics. This election has been way too focused on Hillary and Donald bashing each other, rather than focusing in the majority of the issues. It’s been childish and unreasonable.”
A student who would like to remain anonymous states, “My opinion is that it’s a joke. [It] shows the clear divide in American society. Unless you’re doing your research it’s hard to have an opinion. It’s obvious who the better choice is although neither are pleasing.”
Erica Garnes states, “I think this election year has really been media focused, or media central. There is so much importance placed on this election that people are not only extremely divided on who to vote for, but they have divided themselves against family and friends who don’t side with them. I think with the media keeping everything stirred up with scandals and he said, she said, it has made the people in this country toxic to one another. In the end it doesn’t matter who wins the election, just as long as at the end the country has a new leader, and a country who will stand behind him or her.”
Hannah Suydam states, “I think it’s really sad that I’ve had to focus on morals rather than policy. I feel in the past whether or not you agreed with a person in the way they handled things they were still moral. I feel like this entire election has been on who is worse than the other and vote for the lesser of two evils.”
Each student that was interviewed held a different opinion about their chosen candidate. And in opposition, they also held strong opinions about the candidate they did not support. However, most students could agree that this presidential election was like no other. They did not necessarily mean this in a positive way either. It seems the common public opinion is that this race for president has brought indignity and shame upon our nation as a whole.
Unfortunately, each student interviewed stated this and their anxiety for America moving forward in some way or another. No matter which candidate is elected or which you support it seems that one thing can be agreed upon: America will forever be affected by and may expect norm-lessness for the years to come.
