Lip Sync Showcases Creativity
Last Friday, the annual Homecoming Lip Sync competition between organizations competing for Homecoming court filled the Carter Center Gym with an atmosphere of decades past through themed music and dances. Five teams composed of Alpha Sigma Tau and Chi Omega Psi, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Zeta and Phi Sigma Phi, International Students Club and Phi Delta Pi, and Sigma Sigma Sigma and Sigma Tau Gamma presented their shows representing the decades of the 1920s through the 1990s.
Brandon Venable, a Concord University student said that he really enjoyed the song choices, “The tracks mixed with the appropriate choreography really put you into each era”. Indeed, the song choices were so successful that it caused nostalgia in the audience. From time to time, the audience started singing along to the old songs and some people in the crowd even repeated the movements of the popular “Macarena” after the performing team.
Alumni, who traditionally come to visit their alma mater during Homecoming week, enjoyed the show. Marchelle Bowling, a Concord graduate who used to participate in Homecoming, finds it unusual and great to see the show from the audience. She said the show “was great! All the sororities and fraternities did a great job; they all did a great job representing their time era. It was different, because I wasn’t a part of it, but it was great because I got to see my fellow friends from Alumni Associations.” Marjie Flanigan, Vice President of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students at Concord, who was one of the judges on Friday says “Lip Sync was as always just super. All the groups did fabulous. It was a great theme, a lot of enthusiasm and you can tell how hard the students worked. And it was just a great, great experience”.
Announced on Saturday, October 15, the winners of the Lip Sync competition were the International Students Club and Phi Delta Pi. They presented the show inspired by the 90s, featuring Catherina as a Cher from Clueless and Levi as Will Smith’s character from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Catherina says “We worked very hard all the past month, and I think that we really delivered. And clearly, the judges thought so too!” Levi adds that “It was a really fun time and I enjoyed working on it”. Olga Novikova, a Concord student who participated in the lip sync with the International Students Club says “Lipsync is always super fun! This year our theme was the 90s and we had many songs on our list from our childhood so everyone was very familiar with them. I really enjoyed the dance moves for all dances! We had many talented people on our team from both Phi Delta Pi and ISC, so that’s why I think we did so well in Lipsync!” At the end of the day, all teams did a great job and deserved a standing ovation.
