CU's Game Room: What's New?

The Concord Game Room is a wonderful hangout space for both on-campus students and commuters alike. In the Game Room, students can play video games, watch TV and movies, and play pool, ping-pong, and, during warmer months can rent volleyballs and corn-hole games. Recently, there have been some noteworthy changes to the Game Room which are being kept consistent with the plan of action moving forward.

There have been plans for renovations to the Game Room for a long time, and, due to budget constraints which have been a problem for an equally long amount of time, these renovations might not be seen for a long time. However, students may have recently noticed new sound equipment and a projector setup lining the wall next to the desk.

“Our initial thought was to create a movie viewing area down there,” states Andrew Sulgit, Director of Student Affairs in the Student Center. “If you and your friends want to get together and watch something, that’d be a good place to do it.” In regards to disturbances from both movie watchers and students playing other games in the room, Sulgit hopes that coexistence can be achieved amongst students all using the Game Room. “My guess is folks will be able to focus in on what their corner of the Game Room is.”

Sulgit continues to state that this new system is not designed for campus-wide movie nights, but more of a place where students are not so cramped in comparison to having to watch movies in their dorm rooms. Now students will have a better sound system and a better viewing area for enjoying movies and shows at their leisure. The game library for the PS4 and Xbox One have also been expanded, and Sulgit hopes to expand the systems’ catalogues even more. However, budget constraints still play a factor in how this will happen in the future.

There are now also more stringent policies regarding lounging on the furniture. Using the Game Room furniture to sleep or recline has always been discouraged, but after some inappropriate situations, this discouragement has now become stricter. “We want the Game Room to be as welcoming as possible,” explains Sulgit, “and some folks were saying that it looks like there’s a lot of people down there utilizing it for rest more than gaming or studying. Let’s make sure we’re using it for the purposes intended.”

The Concord Game Room is currently open to all students from 10AM to 10PM. For questions regarding the Game Room, contact Andrew Sulgit in his office in the Student Center Monday through Friday from 8AM-4PM.
