Problems for Asian Students: Part 4
Q: Hi, Heejin. Would you introduce yourself?
A: Hi, my name is Heejin from Chuncheon, South Korea. I am exchange student, so I’m gonna stay here for a one year. My major is Korea architecture Engineering. But here, I chose Recreation Tourism Management because I thought “recreation” is funny and interesting. I take one of the RTM class and the professor, Roy Ramthun, is so humorous.
Q: When was your first day to come to the USA?
A: It was August, 14th, 2016. San Francisco was my first place in USA. The temperature was so impressive. It was too much cold even though it was summer. I took an excursion ship and ate In and Out hamburger for lunch. Also I saw a lot of seal and crazy man who made people surprise. He hid in the bush and popped out from it when people walk in front of the bush. He earned some money for making people surprise. It was hilarious.
Q: Do you miss your country? As you know a lot of international students miss their country.
A: No. I just want to travel around USA. We can use Wi-fi anytime so it is very easy to keep in touch with my friends and family in Korea. And if I miss Korean food, I can buy Korean Ramen in Walmart. So it doesn’t bother me. I do like travel. Whenever I imagine that I am in the strange place, it’s a thrill of joy. I am planning to go to Washington, New York and Florida this winter break. I cannot wait for it! Also, after I finish my exchange student program in USA, I am going to go to Europe, Peru and Mexico.
Q: What made you come here?
A: I was so bored when I was in Korea. So I wanted to do something different. Also, my dream is having a job which can travel all around the world so I decided to improve my English skill. My dream is becoming Architect CM in Dubai.
Q: There are many schools in the USA. Is there any reason that you came to Concord University?
A: It was the cheapest school that I could choose. Also one of my friend was the exchange school student here and she recommended the Concord University.
Q: How do you like it here?
A: First of all, I can use English in my daily life. Also, campus is so little that I feel friendly and safety. And I lose my way so easily, but I don’t have to worry about that here. And people around here are so nice. My one of the favorite person here is the man who makes chicken rice and noodle in cafeteria. He makes the best chicken rice in the world.
Q: What are the hard things to stay here? I mean kind of challenges that you face.
A: I don’t have American friends yet except International students. Also, living in a dormitory is kind of hard stuff for me because I used to live in my own home. And transportation system in Athens is not familiar to me. And I have some weird experience, too. I used to live in Canada so I know what the drug smell is. One before, I slept opening the window and I smelt the drug and it made we wake up. Also, speaking and listening is hard for me. Whenever I have to dictate what the professors say in class, I am depressed. And I need a car but I’ve lived here only one year and with insurance prices, I can’t.
