Freshman Survival Guide 2016

It was about three weeks ago when it started… everything happened so quickly. I am aware of my surroundings, but I keep my eyes on the cracks in the pavement as I move. I heard that they can smell fear. I also heard that they can smell new blood. Other people less brave than me hide in their dorms. Some try to call their parents to save them. But not me. You can hear their feet scrape the ground as they drag over the concrete. Their eyes stare into my soul. I have never seen eyes like this. They seem almost lifeless. People warned me about them, but I never thought the comparison of seniors to zombies would be so literal. It might not be the apocalypse, but it will take all you have to survive.     

Carry a Pack of Gum

    Everyone is nervous to meet new people and make friends. Most people are self-conscious. And  when you are consumed with making sure you have pens, notebooks, and textbooks, one thing you may have forgotten is to brush your teeth. Keeping a pack of gum with you will help you feel more confident. And often, other people around you are in a similar situation. Offer a piece to the person next to you. They will almost always gladly accept it. This is the easiest way to make friends with new people. 

Make a Playlist

    Listening to music has been proven to improve your mood. Even if you can only listen to it on your commute from class to class, sneaking in those extra beats can make a difference. When I blast my favorite tune, I find myself happier, more productive, and more confident. This is also a good studying tip to help you concentrate.

Wear a T-shirt

    On the first day, every one dresses up. Personally, I have worn outfits that one would expect my mom had picked out. Everything matched right down to my socks and nails. But in the coming weeks, I recommend wearing a t-shirt with your favorite band or TV show on it. Not only will you be comfy, you might also strike up a conversation with someone who shares your taste in music and TV. 

Unpack

    After you have squeezed everything you could possibly need to survive your day, unpack your bag. Try to be reasonable with what you re-pack. You do not need two changes of clothes, a blanket, or every textbook you own. Minimize and pack essentials. A phone charger is an essential; every highlighter you own is not. If you find yourself wanting to fill every pocket of your backpack, try carrying a smaller bag. You will be carrying this around all day. Your shoulders will thank you.

Write a Note

    As a student, I like to be independent and do everything for myself. However, sometimes everyone needs a little help. My mom knows this. On my first day, she always writes me a note. She usually puts it in my bag without me knowing. It is a thoughtful surprise and always means the world to me. I suggest you do this for someone you care about. Even if you are the student, leave a nice note somewhere for your roommate to find. Making someone’s day can make your day, too.

Pack a Snack

    There is nothing worse than being in the middle of class and having your stomach audibly growl. Instead of having to walk across campus, throw a granola bar in your bag. This is a no-brainer. But if a zombie apocalypse ever does happen, you will be happy you took my advice. Now, get out there and kill your semester. Figuratively.
