Men’s Soccer— Sophomore forward Sam Ashton was voted to the All-MEC Second Team with junior defender Xander Bailey and sophomore defender Pedro Bassin who both received spots on the All-MEC Honorable Mention Team. Feshman midfielder Moulay Hassani was named to the All-MEC Freshman Team.
Ashton completed the 2017 season with 20 points as he scored nine goals along with assists on two others. His nine goals are tied for the fifth most in a single season in program history while his 20 points are tied for seventh. Ashton, a native from Waterlooville, England, became the first Concord University player since the men’s soccer program was restarted in 2008 to score a hat trick in a game. Ashton’s nine goals were fourth best in the Mountain East Conference this season. This is now the second consecutive season Ashton has been selected to All-MEC postseason team.
Bailey recorded just one assist in the 2017 season, however he was charged with limiting some of the beast scorers in the conference from his left back position. In six games, Bailey and his defensive teammates gave up only four goals to the four players that combined to find the back of the net 42 times during the 2017 season. Bassin was a two-way defender as he scored one goal and had one assist this season. Also, Bassin and the Mountain Lion defense gave up only one or less goals throughout six games this season. Hassani scored two goals and three assists in his first season for the Mountain Lions. The Morocco native scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Wheeling Jesuit. Three assists came against Shepherd, and added a second goal against Salem International and assisted on a goal at Urbana.
Women’s Soccer— The Lady Mountain Lion soccer team travels to the Notre Dame College for a match in the semifinal round of the MEC Tournament at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Mueller Field.
Volleyball— The Concord University volleyball team picked up a key MEC win over the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat’s at the Rockefeller Center Saturday morning. The Mountain Lion’s season improves to 11-17 on the overall season and 5-6 in the Mountain East Conference with their win over WVWC (9-16, 4-7 MEC) in four sets, 25-19, 22-25, 29-27, and 27-25. Concord fell behind 14-11 in the first set, then shortly after went on a 9-2 run to gain the lead and control of the match. Junior middle hitter Brooke Heck and sophomore middle hitter Ellie Lawrence added two kills each in the first set. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis and junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus put the Mountain Lions up 26-25
