The Concord University BSU (Black Student Union) concluded
their Black History Month celebration on February 27th with the
Umoja Ball. "Umoja" means Unity: to strive for and maintain unity
in the family, community, nation and race. The theme of the month
for the BSU was to show the campus, "What is Black," and the
diversity of being an African American. BSU President, James
Riley shares his appreciation and thoughts on this past months
events: "The whole process of planning for all of February's events
was stressful but rewarding. Our group worked hard putting things
together and we thank everyone who played a part in our success.
As for the Umoja Ball, everyone seemed to have a great time. We
had a blast, the DJ enjoyed himself, and our advisor Dr. Grych
even took a moment to dance. We accomplished most of what we
set out to do this month and we look forward to building on the
success. We are gaining popularity now and we hope to continue
educating the campus as well as the community about diversity.
We cant stress enough the idea of unity (umoja) as we welcome all
who share our goals. Again we thank all who came out to support
us this month, and we look forward to seeing everyone at our next
event."
